With Sydney's most popular competition looming, dancers are tweaking their routines ready for the stage. Like us, most dancers are very self critical. We notice the small and intricate movements and can practice the same thing for hours. We are perfectionists in our art!
When competing you are given three short minutes to show your worth and to show that you are deserving of their prize. Do these three minutes weigh up to the hours, days and months that you have spent in the studio? Do these judges see that you have improved on something that you once found difficult? Do they know that you have mastered that triple pirouette after months and months of practice? You are given three minutes and to achieve perfection every time is somewhat impossible.
The thing is, perfection should not be the measure of your success. Your success should depend on whether you did your personal best.
To all of our Sydney friends competing in the McDonald Scholarship over the next two weeks, promise us this. When you get off stage ask yourself, did I beat my personal best? Did I dance better than I did yesterday because at the end of the day, you're performance will not determine the rest of your career, it only contributes to it.
See you there,
